Reception Study
Created by Nick Ryan in collaboration with Kai Lab as part of The Centre for Investigative Journalism's exhibition Inside Intel at Goldsmith's University of London. Reception Study explores how the audio can influence the emotional perception of a piece of visual media.
At one end of the space, a large projection of a news report is displayed, and in front of this are five columns of light. Our photophonics technology is used to transmit different audio through each light column. As the audience walks between light columns, the audio they received in their custom headphones changes. This allows people to alter the emotional scale of the news clip by moving physically in the space. The audio tracks range from normal background sounds of the news clip to a full orchestral accompaniment, and the result is a powerful and beautiful demonstration of how the media can carefully control the way content is received.
