Project xo
Project XO is a dance installation created by New Movement Collective in collaboration with Visualpilots and Fenyce Workspace.
This unique, participative performance is a confronting exploration of power and agency. Members of the audience are invited to wear a pneumatically controlled robotic exoskeleton suit that is able to dictate their movements. They become part of the performance as they are moved on stage through a choreography with the dancers.
For Project XO, Kai Lab assisted with the development of the hardware and control software for the exoskeletons. We worked on methods of weight reduction for the suits in order to increase their functionality, taking them from prototyping phase to performance ready. We developed robust housing for the exposed electronic components and also worked closely with the dancers at New Movement Collective to alter the mechanics to suit their requirements, for example adjusting for comfort and size.
