Takis tuesday - A series on magnetism FOR performative artworks.
This body of work uses magnetism to animate a series of small sculptural pieces, exploring the potential of both electromagnets and rare-earth magnets as drivers of performative artworks. The series is inspired by the work of Takis (Panayiotis Vassilakis), who was a Greek artist that used magnetism to create powerful kinetic, static and sonic sculptures.
These sculptures create an impact through their ability to illustrate specific magnetic properties. They make the invisible forces that underly these magnetic behaviours tangible, creating a beautiful and almost unreal effect. Working with electromagnets is particularly interesting from a design perspective in that their magnetic field can be turned on and off. This affords great opportunity for dynamic design while displaying a fundamental scientific phenomenon.
